Content Check: Beacon Pines
Beacon Pines is a narrative adventure from Hiding Spot Games, published by Fellow Traveller and released in 2022. You read a storybook and play as Luka, a 12-year-old deer boy whose father died when he was six and whose mother has mysteriously disappeared. You collect word charms that change the course of the story and send you between branches. Critics call it cute and creepy, and it has an overwhelmingly positive rating on Steam and a strong score on OpenCritic. It gets the same four checks as everything else here.
Here’s the check: the store page descriptions, the Wikipedia plot summary and critic coverage. I haven’t played it, so this is a screening, not a playthrough.
Verdict: Not for this site. The central mechanic is a magical storybook and word charms that rewrite events, which fails the Magic check.
Magic — Central
The whole game is built on a magical book. Collecting charms and using them to rewrite events is the main way you progress.
Spirits & religion — Not confirmed
I didn’t confirm whether ghosts or spirits appear.
Violence — Not confirmed
No combat turned up in the descriptions I read, but the story deals with death and a mystery with darker turns, and I haven’t confirmed how it’s handled.
Holiday — Not confirmed
One reviewer suggests it for the run-up to Halloween because of its eerie tone, but I didn’t find anything built around a holiday.
If you want to see how this compares to other games I’ve checked, the Vetted Games Database has all of them in one place, and How I Choose Games explains the four checks.
