Content Check: A Short Hike

A Short Hike shows up on almost every gentle, no-stress game list there is, and it usually gets described as flawless. You’re a bird named Claire climbing a mountain to get cell reception, and that’s most of the pitch. It mostly lives up to the reputation. Here’s the full check.

So here’s the full check, run the same way I run every game on this site: the store page and tags, the DLC list, the update history, the wiki, TV Tropes, the community forums, the achievement list, and a full playthrough, including the last stretch, not just the first ten hours.

Verdict: Your call. Here’s exactly why, check by check.

Magic — None

No spellcasting, no magical items, nothing supernatural running any part of the game. Claire climbs, glides, and explores a mountain park using nothing but stamina, a handful of golden feathers, and a couple of tools she picks up along the way.

Spirits & religion — None

Nothing here either, no ghosts, no gods, no shrines or offerings of any kind. The cast is a small island community of animal characters going about an ordinary summer at a provincial park.

Combat — None

There’s no combat system at all. The entire game is built around climbing, gliding, fishing, digging, racing, volleyball, and light parkour. There’s nothing to fight and nothing that fights you.

Holiday — None

No named holiday drives any part of the story or the world. It’s an ordinary summer at a provincial park, full stop.

Where this lands

On the four checks this site runs, A Short Hike clears every single one, there’s genuinely nothing here that trips Magic, Spirits & religion, Combat, or Holiday. The one thing worth flagging, because it falls outside those four checks rather than inside them, is a fishing minigame: you catch fish with a rod as one of several optional side activities. It’s brief, cartoonish, and entirely skippable, but if fishing itself is something you screen out regardless of how it’s presented, it’s in here. That’s the only reason this lands as a judgment call instead of a flat recommendation.

If you want to see how this compares to other games I’ve checked, the Vetted Games Database has all of them in one place, or start with the Clean Cozy Games Checklist for 41 that already passed.
